White Wolf Goes Graphic![]

"...with the company's first full-length graphic novel! Croatan Song, created by the brothers Bridges, expands upon the graphic design elements already found in Werewolf: The Apocalypse. Written by Bill B. (Werewolf developer) and drawn by John B. (Marvel Comics, White Wolf), Croatan Song tells the sad tale of the lost Croatan tribe of Garou. The Garou-bies should find this one good enough to eat! [But remember, no Alphafits in public, dears!]

Live-action vampires beware: The Masquerade's Antagonists is here. Now mortal undead killers join the game, thanks to White Wolf's Year of the Hunter.

Last but not least, White Wolf's interpretive dance "The Employee Shuffle" is finally over. Replacing Jennifer Hartshorn is new-comer Richard Dansky, author of several Wraith books. Jen, of course, has assumed the Vampire reigns."

We Can Find You: Hunting Characters in Roleplaying Games[]

By Thomas M. Kane, Art by Mike Chaney. It's White Wolf's "Year of the Hunter," and this mag is doing its part. We've all roleplayed a manhunt, but how can you stage one fairly and what can players do to ensure that their characters aren't the prey?

Brad's Cookie Report[]

"It all began on a dreary night in January. Half of the White Wolf staff was up cutting and pasting mock RAGE cards for demonstrations. I reached for a box of Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookies. I pulled a cookie out. I took a bite. Then I said, "This has got to be the single worst f*&!ing cookie I have ever had the misfortune of tasting in my entire life!" The room exploded in laughter. Josh Timbrook said, "You need to put a review of cookies in the magazine." So here I am. Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookies are bad. They taste lie chemicals. Don't eat them. "

The White Wolf Readers Choice Awards: The Wolfies[]

The ballots are in, and we've counted every damn vote! What did you pick as best game, best comic and best movie? More importantly, who did you bust on the most?

Praise Where Praise is Due[]

Game Company of the Year

  1. White Wolf
  2. Wizards of the Coast
  3. Steve Jackson Games

This one came in completely unsolicited, so don't get any ideas. In a close fourth spot was TSR.

Movie of the Year

  1. The Crow
  2. Pulp Fiction
  3. Interview With the Vampire

First and second place came down to a contest of single votes - as late ballots came in, the scales tipped back and forth. In a distant fourth and with a bad weave was Star Trek Generations.

CD of the Year

  1. The Downward Spiral, Nine Inch Nails
  2. The Crow Soundtrack
  3. Dookie, Greenday

It looks like the dark-minded people rule, though what a falsely praised "Punk" band has to do with emotive music is beyond us.

Horror, Sci-fi or Fantasy Novel of the Year

  1. Lord of Chaos, Robert Jordan
  2. Taltos, Ann Rive
  3. Dark Destiny, World of Darkness anthology

Votes were scattered far and wide in this one, which meant that a few clustered together resulted in win, place or show. Was '94 that thin a year for speculative fiction?

Comic of the Year (by Title or individual issue)

  1. Sandman
  2. X-Men
  3. A. Spawn
  4. B. Books of Magic

Kinda embarrassing. Looks like those hologram, multi-covered books still have some weight.

Best Roleplaying Game

  1. Wraith: The Oblivion
  2. Castle Falkenstein
  3. Immortal

The folks at Pariah Press should have been more aggressive in their voting; Whispering Vault was nudged out of third place by one vote.

Best Roleplaying Supplement

  1. Book of Shadows, Mage
  2. World of Darkness: Gypsies, Storyteller System
  3. Planescape, AD&D

Surely supplements were released that weren't dark and moody.

Best Boxed Game (cards, wargames)

  1. Vampire: The Eternal Struggle (formerly Jyhad)
  2. Magic: The Gathering
  3. Illuminati: New World Order

Best Miniatures Release (individual, line or company)

  1. Ral Partha
  2. Games Workshop
  3. A.RAFM
  4. B. Heartbreaker

Few people voted for specific miniatures or lines, going straight to preferred companies and their styles.

Best Miniatures Game

  1. Warhammer 40,000
  2. Warhammer
  3. BattleTech

Though none of these games were technically released in '94, they were supported, so let's allow them to place.

Best Computer Game

  1. Doom II
  2. TIE Fighter
  3. Wing Commander III

Doom II ate the banquet while the others pretty much squabbled over table scraps.

Best Play-by-Mail Game

  1. Middle-Earth
  2. Illuminati
  3. Taxes

Seems like we've got some hardcore PBM critics out there. Who's going to argue about a turn when the IRS is the moderator?

Best Roleplaying Game, Comic or Novel Writer

  1. Neil Gaiman
  2. Mark Rein-Hagen
  3. Ann Rice

Guess the old saying is true: "Portray the end of life on earth as a cute girl and you'll be popular." Multi-million-dollar author aside. Ann clearly needs to get in better with gamers in order to be truly popular.

Best Game or Comic Illustrator

  1. Timothy Bradstreet
  2. A. Larry Elmore
  3. B. Todd McFarlane
  4. Tony DiTerlizzi

The saying, "I don't know art, but I know what I like," Also seems to stand true. Brom was just nudged out.

Best Musical Performer (individual or group)

  1. Nine Inch Nails
  2. Tori Amos
  3. Greenday

Long live the mainstream.

Best Film Actor or Actress

  1. Brandon Lee
  2. Brad Pitt
  3. Samuel Jackson

Apparently the year's favorite film characters were dead, undead or barely spared death.

The Cracking Corner[]

Game most likely to be played by your little brother

  1. AD&D
  2. Magic: The Gathering
  3. Street Fighter

These three absolutely rocked the category. There seems to be a little brother conspiracy at work.

Most sexist game

  1. Macho Women With Guns
  2. AD&D
  3. Anything by White Wolf

It looks like different people define sexist in different ways.

Movie that gave you a chubby (or that odd stirring from below)

  1. Interview With the Vampire
  2. A. True Lies
  3. B. Sirens
  4. The Lion King

Was there something in The Lion King that we missed? Walt Disney is rolling over in his freezer as we speak.

"Coolest" novel best left on the tree

  1. Game company fiction
  2. Game company fiction
  3. Game company fiction

There's a message in there.

Comic most likely to make Stan Lee roll over in Jack Kirby's grave

  1. "All those damn X-Man spin-offs."
  2. "Any comic with a damn foil-wrapped, phosphorescent, embossed, wrap-around cover."
  3. After #1 and 2, nothing was left

Some weird voting here. Comparing with Comic of the Year, it would appear that just as many people like mainstream, adolescent-aimed comics as dislike them. With that much opposition to it, how long can unadulterated speculation continue?

CD most likely to bring back the 8-track

  1. Pulp Fiction Soundtrack
  2. Vitology, Pearl Jam
  3. A. The Sign, Ace of Base
  4. B. Hell Freezes Over, The Eagles

Just so the folks at TSR know, Terror Trax was a contender.

Thanks to everyone who voted. We'll be doing it again next year, so sharpen your #2 pencils.
