Summary[]

From the Cover Card for Whimsy Cards:

A deck of 47 cards to be used as an aid in any role-playing game. With Whimsies, players intervene in the game, adding to the story, subject to gamemaster approval. A new way to role-play.

From Ars Magica Revised Edition's List of Lion Rampant Products:

Players use Whimsy Cards to influence the plot of an adventure, allowing them to add their creativity and ideas to the story. Usable with any game. $3.95

From Nocturnal Media's page:

Whimsy Cards are a narrative accessory that allow players to add to the story of any tabletop roleplaying game. Distribute one card to each player at the start of play. Players may use them at any time by revealing a card and describing how the current scene or situation changes as a result. The Gamemaster is allowed to suggest modifications and even veto the use of the card, but he or she is encouraged to allow as much of the player's input as possible. The GM may then give the player another card now, or at the end of the current scene.

Background Information[]

  • Whimsy Cards were created as an initial product for Lion Rampant at Gen Con 1987 as a replacement for the Ars Magica Rulebook (Which wasn't finished in time for the Convention).
  • A Second Edition of Whimsy Cards was also printed within the same year.
  • The cards were reviewed in White Wolf Magazine #8 by Stewart Wieck.
  • A successful Kickstarter in 2016, brought the cards back into print and are available as a pdf./POD.
