The Cub is the player character in The Book of Hungry Names.
Biography[]
Little concrete information is given about the Cub's background, given that the majority is given up to player choice. They experienced their First Change in early 2019 at the age of 16-17, meaning that they were born circa 2002-2003. After their First Change, they were picked up by Eyes-of-Clay and, with nowhere better to send them, he allowed them into his pack.
In 2022, the pack's territory was intruded upon by a fomor possessed by Tekenjat, which the Cub struck out alone to successfully kill. Clay arrived and cited the Litany to be allowed to eat the horse-fomor's corpse, which poisoned him with Wyrm-taint. The Cub was sent by the remaining pack members to the old location of the fallen Broad Brook Sept to track down the source of the fomor and possibly find a cure for Clay before he died.
At Northampton, after some searching, the Cub encountered Elton Dey, who, after the Cub found David Banicki infesting the Broad Brook caern, agreed to help them track down the surviving members of Broad Brook scattered across western Massachusetts - namely Ashley Nin, Melodie Palys, and Patrick Hodge. The five then formed the Broad Brook Garou pack in order to hopefully restore the Broad Brook Sept and its influence.
Tribe[]
The Cub would start a game tribeless, as they are yet to prove themselves to be worthy of Gaia'a blessing. However, after gathering enough werewolves to form a pack, the cub will be approached by Stormcat, who would offer to put up a word in for them to a Patron of a tribe of the cub's choosing.
Currently available for joining tribes are:
- Shadow Lords
- Silver Fangs
- Children of Gaia
- Bone Gnawers
- Glass Walkers
- Black Furies («Wardens and Furies» DLC)
- Hart Wardens («Wardens and Furies» DLC)
- Galestalkers («Those Who Refuse To Die» DLC)
- Ghost Council («Those Who Refuse To Die» DLC)
- Red Talons («Seek and Destroy» DLC)
- Silent Striders («Seek and Destroy» DLC)
Notes[]
- Due to age and apparent overall inexperience with other supernatural entities, the Cub cannot discern vampires from hippies, up to the point when they can't even figure out they're working for one.
- For some reason, Clay abandoned his duties as a Kinseeker and didn't stop the Cub from killing their parents during the First Change.
- The Cub is the youngest of the Choice of Games novels protagonists. Even the OfB protagonist, the shop owner, is allowed a driver's licence, while the Cub isn't.
- While the player can choose their name, the Cub will recieve a surname with the faux credentials from Daphne Clear. The surname will be a month and depends from auspice: September (ragabash), October (philodox), November (theurge), December (galliard) or January (ahroun).
