New Parameter for Alternative Text

We have a number of book articles that have a descriptor in the title, for example Road of Sin (book). Since that's not the actual name of the book, I suggest adding a new optional parameter to this template to display alternative text. Something like this:

{{b|VTDA|Road of Sin (book)|Road of Sin|page=25}}

Would display:

VTDA: Road of Sin, p. 25

The new parameter would be optional, and adding it would not affect any current booklinks. The code change is simple. What are your thoughts? --ebakunin (talk) 18:54, April 12, 2018 (UTC)

I know you mean well, but the "(book)" descriptor has helped a lot of new editors over the years. Most people (me included), don't use the templates in the references section like you do - and I fear that without the "(book)" thingy, more often than not people will simply use a "Road of Sin" instead of "Road of Sin (book)". My point is: the "(book)" descriptor has educational value in itself. But maybe that's just me having too litle faith in our community, I don't know. Russel Hammond (talk) 05:54, April 13, 2018 (UTC)
I also don't use the template. I never seemed to get it right. The question I have is if we take away the (book) indicator, will we also take away other indicators. For example, There are two "Book of Storyteller Secrets"... one VTM and the other CTD. (That might be the only occurance of such.) For those who don't use the template, how would this affect them? Bro David (talk) 13:21, April 13, 2018 (UTC)
Bro David, the proposed alternative text parameter would not affect any currently used bookmarks. --ebakunin (talk) 16:52, April 13, 2018 (UTC)
It is a good thought, but I fear it would cause more confusion among new editors than it would solve problems, at least without a proper explanation or instruction. Sharth (talk) 15:26, April 13, 2018 (UTC)
The other reason I'm recommending this is because it's the standard for the Starwars Wikia, which is the biggest Wikia site and the gold standard for how to build Fandom wikis. --ebakunin (talk) 17:34, April 13, 2018 (UTC)
And if the Star Wars Wikia jumped off a bridge, would you jump too? -- Madmaudlin (talk) 23:08, April 13, 2018 (UTC)
