Rob was one of Dr. Charles Reid's graduate students studying to join the Progenitors. His classmate Andrew Greene initially described him as a "skinny, zit-faced geek" who compulsively took notes, but after winning a special assignment in Reid's lab, Rob and Mary Beth started dating and Rob became more confident. Eventually he even began arguing with Reid. In response, Reid had Rob killed and replaced with a more biddable clone, who eventually became a technician in Reid's lab.
