Ren Wei

Art by Jason Felix

Ren Wei is a Shih, or hunter, who actively searches out any and all supernatural creatures and destroying them. He can not grasp that anything that has powers above that or normal man could be anything but evil and believe that all the "good" ones abandoned the world long ago. He keeps a small basement apartment near Hong Kong University.

Ren Wei's childhood is awash in nightmares and remembers little of it before his family was destroyed. He even believes that his life before differed little than that of his neighbors in Hong Kong's Wanchai district. Then... blood, screams. He had been huddled in a tiny closet by his mother in haste. Ren Wei can only recall waves of darkness and terror, then there was only silence and the overpowering smell of blood, and later, death.

He was found by the police three days later, nearly dead from dehydration and frighten beyond comprehension. A very tall, thin stranger took interest in Ren Wei and instead of being placed in a foster home or in a children's home, he was adopted. The man took the boy to a small hidden monastery on an island south of Lantou. Ren Wei spent the next 20 years studying the perfection of the mind and body and learning the ways of the Shih.

From his "father" Ren Wei learned the true nature (or most likely) story behind his family's death. They had been victims of an enraged and mindless flesheater, a chih-mei. The veteran witch-hunter arrived on the heels of the official investigation (which turned up nothing but an apparent gang-style murder), tracked down the creature and destroyed it. He then claimed Ren Wei as his own.

Wei has returned to Hong Kong since completing his training and spends his time searching for traces of supernatural activity. He usually does not have to look very hard. Wei does not discreetly look the other way when confronted by evidence of the Shen. He seeks it out and destroys it.

Ren Wei's body is lean and hard, schooled by years of rigorous discipline. He dresses in casual, loose-fitting clothes, usually favoring dark colors. His shoulder length hair makes him look like a student, and he does little to disabuse others of the notion. His face typically assumes a guarded expression, rarely betraying any emotions.
