Rafael Obrero, better known as "The Mortician", was an infamous hunter within the Minneapolis-St. Paul region.
Biography[]
Rafael and his wife Maria worked as pathologists for the Medical Examiner's office in downtown Minneapolis. In the winter of 2010, both were working an extra-late shift as a recent blizzard had resulted in the deaths via exposure of dozens of homeless. However, while taking autopsy photos of yet another "Jane Doe", the corpse bafflingly did not register on camera...
Suddenly, the "corpse" reared up, hissing with bared fangs and burying it's teeth in Maria's throat. Thinking quickly, Rafael grabbed the nearest weapon - an autopsy hammer - and caved in the creature's skull. Though he succeeded in killing the monster, it was sadly too late for his wife, who perished from blood loss in Rafael's arms.
After that fateful night, Rafael and his fellow MEs who had witnessed the event became fanatically devoted hunters, developing a network of followers throughout the American Midwest. Over the next decade they recruited survivalists, law enforcement, even a cabal of hedge mages to their cause, their mark of membership and signature weapon being the hook-handled autopsy hammer. Rafael's determination and lust for revenge were such that he was even willing to sacrifice his own daughter Alejandra to his crusade. He deliberately offered her up to a roving fledgling in order to potentially gain an "undercover" operative within Kindred ranks. Unfortunately for him, his plan worked a little too well: after being Embraced Alejandra immediately succumbed to frenzy and drank her father dry before fleeing.
