Vampire: The Masquerade[]
The Iberian Peninsula is a strange mix of Kindred. Almost all clans and philosophies are represented, from Lasombra elders for young Gangrel anarchs to firm entrenched members of the Sabbat (who actively participate under the guise of anarchists or Basque separatists). Divisions between clans and age lines lead members to constant quarrelsome; something of high value is obtained and accomplished.
History[]
In medieval times, the Gnostic Cainite Heresy had a strong presence in Portugal. It was led in Lisbon by Bishop Vibius Fimbria, who both contended with Archbishop Monçada's efforts to destroy the Heresy and surpressed the Cainite offshoot of the so-called Apostles of the Third Caine. Some of the Apostles, led by the Asturian vampire Balesquida, believed King Sancho I to be a possible Third Caine, although these hopes were diminished by his death in 1211.[1]
The Ventrue Jorge Manuel da Gama was the "main force" in Portugal from the 16th to the early 19th century, before entering torpor. His disappearance allowed Spanish (presumably Sabbat) and some French forces to enter Portugal.[2]
During the Victorian Age, Portugal was split between Camarilla and Sabbat domains. Lisbon is the only city with a known allegiance, belonging to the Camarilla since at least this period, and up to the modern nights.
Jorge Manuel da Gama's awakening in the late 20th century might be connected to the prosperity and political liberalization experienced by Portugal in that same period.[2]
Modern Nights[]
Things appear to have changed in the country with the rise and rapid expansion of of the Ventrue of the Cult of Orthia, now centered on Lisbon.[3]
