Places-That-Aren't, also known as Non-Representational Vortices, are locations within the Shadow that do not correspond to real-world locations, either in terms of the actual existence of said places or in terms of the distances involved.[1][2] These can occasionally represent mythic locations, such as lost cities, but in most cases they are simply a function of the geography of the Shadow, existing only for their own sake.[1]

Due to their incongruence with reality, human-related spirits are incapable of existing in these places; in their absence, other sorts of spirits thrive.[1]

Due to their potential size and/or inaccessibility in contrast with other locations in both the mundane world and Shadow, Uratha and powerful spirits have been known to utilize Places-That-Aren't as fortified hideouts.[2]
