The Ocelomeh, or jaguar warriors, were an elite band of Aztec warriors who acted as rivals to the cuacuauhtin.[1]
Overview[]
As with their rivals, admission into and rising within the ocelomeh requires demonstrations of skill as a fighter; those who prove their worth through enemy captures and other brave deeds earn the opportunity to wear the skin of a jaguar through one final test: killing a jaguar with one's bare hands, or killing one of the jaguar's ancient foes, the First Sun People.[1] Those who fail without dying are hunted down to keep the secret of the First Sun People's existence.[1]
Fall[]
When Motecuhzoma II disbanded the cuacuauhtin, the leaders of the ocelomeh managed to talk the emperor out of bringing the jaguars the same fate by claiming that their commoner members were far from any positions of importance.[2] This argument saw the jaguar warriors survive until the end of the empire at the hands of the Spaniards in the siege following the Night of Sorrows.[3]
