A Mortal is a non-supernatural human being[1]; the term tends to be used interchangeably with "human"[2]. This can, at times, be somewhat non-indicative, given that the majority of supernatural templates are not actually immortal.
Mechanically speaking, "mortal" is a template that acts as the base of any character[3], onto which the supernatural template is then added.[4][5] This is part of what creates the modular nature of the Chronicles of Darkness in contrast to the Classic World of Darkness.
Interestingly, the term is used as a prerequisite for certain powers (e.g. Atariya or Infected)[6][7][8][1], indicating that there is a gray area of supernatural mortals in those who have supernatural Merits but lack a supernatural template (e.g. Vampire, Uratha, etc.).
