Mona Ying is a Kuei-jin of the Sublime Caretakers wu and resides with either the boat people of the Harbour Harbour or in Kowloon.
Biography[]
While at Hong Kong University, Mona Ying became very interested in Politics. She discovered her talent for public-speaking (or as others put it “rabble rousing”) during the Tiananmen Square demonstrations and later became critical of the British, which left millions to the mercies of the fabulously rich (mostly British) upper classes.
Many of her friends urged her to go into politics, but Mona Ying truly believed that anyone who held public office would eventually succumb to corruption. She went the grass roots rout and lobbied for better working conditions. Eventually Mona added women and children’s issues. She even started campaigning for the thousands of boat people in Hong Kong’s harbor. She developed many enemies both in the Chinese government as well as the British.
She started to receive death threats. Some were from those who supported Chinese home rule while others had a distinct British tone to them. She ignored them all determined that her path was the right one. As a result, Mona Ying’s body was found battered in an alley in Kowloon two days before an important rally in front of the People’s Bank of China.
Her spirit traveled to the Yomi due to the violence of her death. There she was confronted by her idealism and ignorance. Mona’s P’o thrust her out into the Middle Kingdom to save her from further humiliation.
She was brought before Anguo Chun for judgment and placed within a wu. Mona passionately insisted that she be allowed to continue her interrupted life’s work. Huan Hai asked for Mona to be assigned to her wu, the Sublime Caretakers, and Chun agreed.
Mona is not happy with her wu’s connection with the protection rackets among the boat people but she agrees with the need to care for these despised residents of Hong Kong. She is prepared to battle the Chinese government should they attempt to destroy this way of life.
