The Modern Enigma Society is a fan club and LARP group for World of Darkness and Chronicles of Darkness games.
History[]
The Camarilla Fan Club was officially launched at VikingCon in Bellingham, Washington in 1992. It organized as a non-profit under Washington law in 1993, and in 1994 signed agreements with White Wolf to become the official fan club. This incarnation of the Camarilla dissolved soon after, however, as the original founders were unable to continue devoting the time required to the organization. [1]
In 1995, the club re-formed in Salt Lake City in order to maintain continuity of membership. This incarnation of the Camarilla also sought "official fan club" status from White Wolf. In 1998, the club attempted to trademark the word "Camarilla"; this, and other disputes about the relationship between the club and the company, led to lawsuits in 2002. White Wolf took over running the Camarilla, and the original Board of Directors resigned and dissolved the club as a separate organization.[1][2]
At the Grand Masquerade in 2011, the club was re-established as an independent organization, and changed its name to the Mind's Eye Society. In August of 2020, it rebranded again as the Modern Enigma Society after the decision to end their relationship with White Wolf and their partnership with Canada at Midnight.
LARPs[]
MES organizes ongoing LARPs, with story-lines that continue for years at a time and span multiple locations. Members who actively volunteer in the club gain prestige and volunteer incentive points, a measure of how much each member has contributed overall to the organization, as well as starting experience for their character, and spendable points which can be exchanged for in-character benefits and story hooks. These LARPs occasionally undergo reboots to allow new players to join from the beginning.
Live events were suspended in 2020 due to the pandemic switching to a primarily virtual game model. In 2021 MES resumed play of Vampire: The Masquerade (Sabbat & Camarilla-Anarch-Independent Alliance), Changeling: The Dreaming and Werewolf: The Apocalypse.[3] In 2022 they resumed their in-person convention schedule with safety measures in place to limit risks from Covid-19 exposure.
Today in 2023 they have announced the end of their Masquerade Sabbat venue and the beginning of development of a new Hunter: The Vigil venue using the Chronicles of Darkness 1.0 system.
