Rev. Milo Arboghast was a prominent member of the Church of Michael Archangel. In his secret nova alter-ego, Avatar, he preached that novas were God's chosen messengers, while as a brother of St. Michael he trained members to track down and murder novas.
Overview[]
Arboghast was an independent fundamentalist preacher in New York City with no denominational affiliation prior to joining the Michaelites.[1] It is unclear whether he had already erupted before joining the sect.
Arboghast possessed extreme strength and some degree of invulnerability, as well as the power to sway crowds with his speech. N! the News called him "the Big Apple's holiest roller" for his frequent speeches promoting novas as divine saviors. As Brother Milo, in 2010 he persuaded members of the Church of Michael Archangel to take up arms against novas, and trained them to stalk and kill them. These lessons took place in an abandoned church, which Arboghast had set up as an emergency bunker.
One of his trainees fixated on the Avatar, and eventually realized that Brother Milo and the Avatar were the same person. When the trainee revealed this knowledge to the other Michaelites, Arboghast initially attacked, then fell back and incited a mob that literally tore some of the trainees limb from limb. One trainee survived and tracked Arboghast back to his apartment, but not before sending warnings to other trusted Michaelites.
Afterwards, N! the News reported that the violence at the Michaelites' church was an attempted citizen's arrest that got out of hand, and that Brother Milo and his student had died in a gas explosion. A separate piece speculated on the disappearance of the Avatar, and concluded that without his "favorite rival," Brother Milo, the nova had gotten bored and left New York.[2]
