Mana (also referred to as pneuma, atar, jiva or hekau) is the fluid form of the Materia Prima, otherwise called Prime, Supernal energy filtered down into the Fallen World.[1][2]

First Edition[]

Mana is Supernal energy drawn into the Fallen World. Some of it is residual energy left trapped when the Abyss formed, recycled over the millennia into a thousand forms, but some of it is fresh, brought into the world by a mysterious form of grace from on high.[3] In a Hallow, it can also be crystallized into a material form called Tass.[4]

Mana itself is normally invisible and intangible, undetectable to those without Mage Sight.[3] Mages perceive Mana in many different ways.[3] It is most often described as a fiery, fluid energy, either pure white or prismatic, containing all the colors of the spectrum.[3] Some mages perceive Mana as another sort of power or force, in accordance with their own Path.[3] The particular Arcanum a mage uses for his Mage Sight often colors the experience.[3]

Using and Regaining Mana[]

With the use of their Gnosis, mages are able to harness the power of Mana for various purposes:

  • Some powerful spells and attainments cost mana[3]
  • Improvised casting costs mana[3]
  • Any magic casts sympathetically costs a mana[3]
  • Mana can also be used to reduce paradox die when casting magic[5]
  • Mana can be used to restore your pattern, healing bashing or lethal damage[3]

There are also various ways of regaining Mana:

  • Performing an oblation at a Hallow allows one to gather mana[3]
  • A full Hallow crystalises mana in the form of Tass, which (if in edible form) can be consumed to regain mana[6]
  • Scouring one's pattern (either by inflicting a resistant lethal wound, or by temporarily lowering a dot of physical attribute) allows you to recover 3 mana[7]
  • Mages who are initiated in a legacy can perform legacy-aligned oblations, but can only gain as much mana per day as they have dots in the legacy's primary Arcanum.[8]
  • Blood sacrifice of a living creature also creates mana. [4]

Second Edition[]

Supernal energy, over time, bleeds over into into the realms material. In its free-flowing form, this energy is known as mana; when crystallized, it is referred to as tass.[9] Mana is known to readily form and collect in locations known as Hallows.[9][10]

Using and Regaining Mana[]

This resource may be used for the following purposes:

  • Improvising spells outside of one's ruling Arcana[11]
  • Utilizing spells that violate the Lie or push the boundaries of physics[11]
  • Usually, the use of attainments[11]
  • Reducing Paradox risk[11]
  • Bolstering one's Pattern to heal[11]
  • Activating mage armour[12]

Mana may be regained through the following practices:

  • Performing oblation at a Hallow[11]
  • Consumption of Tass[11]
  • Moments of Supernal revelation (usually via fulfillment of an Obsession)[11]
  • Scouring one's Pattern[11]
  • Blood sacrifice[11]
