Jonathan Kelvin was an American thanatologist and one of the founding members of the Arcanum.

Biography[]

Kelvin was an expert in thanatology, the study of death and the afterlife, including hauntings and related phenomena.[1] He was among the guests invited by Benjamen Holmscroft in 1885 to discuss the shortcomings of the Hermetic Order of the Rising Day and other such occult fraternities.[2] He went on to be one of the founding members of the Arcanum, though he opted not to remain at Holmscroft Manor.[3]

In 1888, Kelvin became the director of the Arcanum's first chapter house, in Boston. He remained on the Executive Committee into the late 1890s.[4] In 1910, the Boston chapter house was destroyed in a fire after member Robert Brooks attempted to infiltrate a vampire cult, an even which rattled Kelvin personally and lead the whole Arcanum to increase their personal security measures. Kelvin eventually relocated to the Washington, D.C. chapter house, which became the central chapter for the United States, but he became even more reclusive and death-obsessed.[5]
