The Jeremiad are a Sworn faction who believe the Contagion is divine in nature.
Overview[]
While its members may not all believe in the same god or gods, they agree that the Contagion is a warning, like the plagues inflicted on Egypt when they wouldn't free the Israelites. It's a sign that the world has fallen from grace, and if the spiritual sickness that caused it is properly addressed, there's hope. But that requires everyone - perhaps especially the beings that go bump in the night - to atone and repent, in other to be worthy of that second chance.
The Jeremiad see themselves as the conscience of the Sworn. They're happy to be counselors, confessors and confidants for members of other factions, and they advocate for respectful treatment of mortals as a cornerstone of good behavior. That said, they are also quite willing to kill an unrepentant sinner or destroy an irredeemably tainted place. Other factions sometimes call the Jeremiad fanatics, and they're not always wrong; the most zealous members can justify almost anything in the name of their ideals.
Origins[]
The faction takes its name from the prophet Jeremiah, who foretold the destruction of the First Temple in 587 BCE. However, the faction wasn't formed until after 541 CE, when the Justinian Plague in Constantinople coincided with an outbreak of Contagion.
Methods[]
Unlike the Cryptocracy, the Jeremiad don't hold themselves above the rest of the world - they know they need to work on their own souls as much as anyone. Each member engages in their preferred form of mystical self-reflection, seeking to purge themselves of their sins and flaws. They pore over prophecies and sacred texts, looking for warnings of Contagion or clues to its cure. They're also one of the most aggressive recruiters of the Sworn. While the majority of the Jeremiad are Christian, they are open to other faiths; however, infighting over beliefs and practices can paralyze whole sects if it's not reigned in.
When Contagion does appear, they try to purify contaminated places and heal the sick, while also holding other Sworn to a high moral standard. If all else fails, though, purging the taint with fire is a viable option.
The Jeremiad Vector is Fervor.
