Jeffrey Degenhardt II is the Warden of Ashcroft State Penitentiary. He opens a portal to the Shadowlands in order to bring back the ghosts of his family.

History[]

Degenhardt's wife Helene and children Celeste "Constance" Marie and Jeffrey III died in 1926, according to headstones found near his mansion. The exact circumstances of their deaths are unclear, but it's implied that vampires were responsible.

In 1946, a coterie of vampires settled in Ashcroft and Embraced Degenhardt. For over fifty years, the vampires used the prison inmates for blood and for horrific experiments. According to his journal, Degenhardt systematically killed the other vampires over the years, until by 1990 only he and Dr. Hadrian were left.

After the disastrous execution of Nathaniel Arkady in 2001, Degenhardt seemingly disappeared. However, in reality he was engineering a plot to open a portal to the Shadowlands and "rescue" the ghosts of his family, allowing them to possess new living bodies. Degenhardt planned a rave in the prison yard on the anniversary of the Arkady execution, then he and Hadrian used the energy it generated to re-open the portal. Fortunately, a team of Hunters managed to track Degenhardt down, destroy him, and close the portal.

Background Information[]

  • Degenhardt's first name is never mentioned in-game, but is extrapolated from the name of his son, Jeffrey Degenhardt III. It's possible, albeit uncommon, that Jeffrey III was named after a different relative, and the Warden has a different given name from his son.
  • Degenhardt's clan is not officially stated, given his ability to manipulate shadows, and his attempt to open a door to the Underworld, it's likely he's a Lasombra. To add to this, the death of his family may have been orcastrated by his sire to prove his resolve for the embrace into the clan.
  • Degenhardt also displays knowledge of Celerity.
  • While the gravestones indicate that Degenhardt's family died on August 9th, 1956, in-game documentation states it occurred in 1926. Given Degenhardt himself seems to have been Embraced in 1946, the 1926 date is probably the more accurate.

Dialogue + Quotes[]

  • "Get out of our home. You’ve spilled enough blood in here, Leave me be."
  • "You were here when Arkady was executed, Just as I was. He’s still there…haunting death row. I can’t get anywhere near him or do anything about it. He’s your link. Now go."
  • "You don't seem to understand. They came in here… they killed my family. They made me into this…thing. I didn’t want it! I didn’t ask for it! I HAD NO CHOICE! I..have..left to lose. Welcome to eternity."
  • "All I wanted was my life back But you could not give me one chance at happiness could you? I could have had them recreated, just as they were, but you destroyed the vessels Hadrian made form them. Now I have to put their souls in these people instead. That doesn’t matter to you does it? DOES IT? All you care about is your Damned HUNT! The real tragedy… is that you actually think you can make a difference. You’re throwing pebbles at giants. Is this really how you want to spend the last moments of your life? No matter what your gifts, you’re still only human. I…am…eternal.
  • (His last words during his defeat) - NOOOooOOoOoO!!!!
