Jade is a mineral found in the Middle Kingdom. When attuned, common jade becomes a living substance capable of holding Yin and Yang Chi. Different colors of Jade have different properties.
The Jades[]
- Black Jade - Tortoise Jade - This jade is attuned to Yin and can hold up to 5 points of Yin Chi. Artisans often carve it into teardrop shapes or those of Water creatures.
- Blue or Green Jade - Dragon Jade - These colors of jade represent the Element Wood. It can hold both Yang and Yin Chi: up to three points of Yang and two points of Yin. It is often carved into floral shapes or those of animals of the forest.
- Red Jade - Feng (Phoenix) Jade - This is Fire Jade and exemplifies Yang. It can hold up to five points of Yang Chi. It is often carved into fire shapes or images of Phoenixes. It is also just as likely to be left in raw shape with little carving.
- White Jade - Tiger Jade - Exemplifying the Element of Metal, Tiger Jade can hold up to three points of Yin and two points of yang Chi. It is often carved into martial shapes and is a popular adornment for pommel grips of weapons, even pistol grips.
- Yellow or Grey Jade - Mandarin Jade - This jade, representing Earth, is balanced and the most valuable because it can hold either type of Chi up to five points. It is often carved to represent noble beasts or the trappings of kingship like fans or scepters.
The Hsien[]
Just as the Kithain are sensitive to Cold Iron, the shinma can be sensitive to Jade. If the proper ritual awakens the chi of the jade it can cause aggravated wounds to the hsien. Demon Hunters and Shih know this and often carry jade weapons. Jade, though, does not affect them the same way Iron does the Fae. The hsien do not lose powers or abilities or gain Banality when in close proximity to it and merely touching it does not do harm. Only if the jade has been purposefully attuned to cause harm will cause injury. Even the it must be used as a weapon and the shinma can roll to soak, though with minus 2 dice from their Stamina.
It should be stated that even ordinary mortals, even with no training, can attune jade through prayer and meditation. Jade is widely known to be of protection against spirits and the hie are still spirits even if they are trapped in human bodies.
The shinma often use jade to gather Yugen and it is consider precious and sacred. It is part of the Ten Thousand Things and an important gift of P'an Ku, a part of the August Personage of Jade's very body.
