Hunter: Urban Legends is a sourcebook for Hunter: The Reckoning.

Summary[]

From the White Wolf Catalog:
It Was on a Night Just Like This...
The stalker with a hook for a hand. The old witch in the woods. The giant alligator in the sewers. Horror stories pervade modern culture, springing from myths, folklore, conspiracy theories and urban legends. But what if these stories were true? What if these imaginary monsters were real? What if they stalked the world and preyed upon humanity? What if you could face them?
The Nightmare Made Real
Urban Legends offers whole new possibilities for Hunter: The Reckoning as the creatures of modern and ancient myths are explored as hunter foes. The limits of the Storyteller System are tested as bizarre creatures from other games and beings never portrayed before in the World of Darkness emerge to perplex, plague and terrify the imbued. This is the ultimate scary story for Hunter.

Contents[]

Prologue: The Murder Shows[]

Introduction[]

  • Source Materials
    • The Ring/Ringu
    • Jan Harold Brunvand's Books (The Vanishing Hitchhiker, The Baby Train and Encyclopedia of Urban Legends)
    • Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk
    • Stinger by Robert R. McCammon
    • Jeepers Creepers

Chapter 1: Contact from Beyond[]

Demonstrates how baffled and overwhelmed the chosen can be in their pursuit of the hunt. It reminds us that false assumptions, erroneous guesses and arrogance in dealing with "known" monsters can lead to a horrible end.

Chapter 2: Morbid Curiosity[]

Illustrates how little hunters really know about the other side. Rare, fleeting and bizarre beings exist that have rarely been encountered before. Recently exposed to the truth, the chosen can't possibly know or grasp the full complexities of such monsters that have existed for ages.

Chapter 3: Once Upon a Time[]

Explores the range and depth of monsters. Human culture may have glimmers of understanding about some creatures, while others utterly defy comprehension. Yet they still arise to challenge the imbued.

Chapter 4: The Sea-Born Darkness[]

Confronts the fact that not only monsters are touched by the supernatural. Whether hunters know it or not, settings and places can be tainted, too, and be a threat to what the chosen hold dear.

Chapter 5: Rules and Storytelling[]

Intended for Storytellers alone. It offers tips and guidance on how to understand and portray confusing, rare and completely new monsters in your game. It also explores introducing mystical or haunted places for your characters to explore.

Background Information[]

  • Ads at the back of the book include: The Trilogy of the Fallen, Houses of the Fallen and Damned & Deceived.
  • The Prologue, "The Murder Shows," involves Lupe tracking down the producer of Slaughterhouse Video-like VHS tapes.
  • Chapter 1: Contact from Beyond is about imbued getting trapped in the Umbra after mistaking voices coming from it as ghost-like messages. It turns out that the odd ghost-like messages are coming from Garou in the Umbra. When Claire investigates the source, she comes across Wyrm-tainted bones and slips into the Umbra. Also, pages 24-25 contain an e-mail between Glass Walkers coded so much in their own computer lingo that it is hard to translate.
  • Chapter 2: Morbid Curiosity is about an Imbued encountering changelings, making the mistake of thinking that a Satyr is a Garou due to malicious misinformation from Wallace Vender.
  • Chapter 3: Once Upon a Time involves Anon52 trying to revive his son's body from just his decapitated head in New Jersey while looking for the Jersey Devil. He finds and frees the Jersey Devil from Revenants. His story is hard to believe and gets him banned from hunter-net.
  • Chapter 4: The Sea-Born Darkness is about manfred313 chasing after Alameda on the Sao Joao Baptista ship in the Atlantic. However, the crew is slowly being changed into Fomori and "Seth McCart" is also after Alameda. There is some great Wyrm spirit/bane in the ocean that is causing nightmares to the crew and people on the ship are being sacrificed to it by Alameda. While manfred313 survives the whole ordeal, he's afraid that Seth MacCartt and Magadon are now after him.
