Ghost Eaters are ectophages, mortals who have discovered a way to consume ghosts for Plasm, which they use to prolong their lives.
Ectophagia is not uncommon for desperate ghosts and the occasional Sin-Eater, but devouring the corpus of a sapient ghost is a disturbing experience and almost certainly a Breaking Point. Ghost Eaters usually do not start with any inherent ability to interact with ghosts, but use a unique ritual called the Cuisine to render ghosts into a form they can consume. This may involve trapping the ghosts in food or other objects the Ghost Eater can easily consume, rendering them tangible so they can be butchered, or some other means of breaking them down for Plasm. Some discover their own Cuisine, while others learn it from a mentor as part of a grim lineage.
Ghost Eaters are defined by their Rapacity, which is a measure of how much Plasm they have consumed over time as well as how much they can retain and spend. As their Rapacity increases, they much spend more Plasm to arrest their aging process, and may undergo physical mutations that reflect the nature of their Cuisine. They also manifest Dread Powers, including ghostly Numina, that facilitate their continued predations.
Ghost Eaters tend to be solitary, and for obvious reasons are likely to run afoul of krewes who object to their diets. However, Ghost Eaters may also have unique knowledge about the dead and the Underworld that they can barter in exchange for their safety, especially if the krewe is willing to tolerate some amount of ectophagia. Several lineages of Ghost Eaters originated with Bound ectophages, a fact not all Sin-Eaters are comfortable with.[1]
