Formosae ("Beautiful Ones") are a form of non-Kindred vampire that feeds on human misery, disappointment, and the like.[1] They are an interesting case of a vampire that is almost, but not quite close enough to the Kindred to count as a Clan.[2]

Overview[]

Though they start out beautiful, the Formosae engorge themselves in their feedings, growing fat upon, literally, the misery of their victims, gaining Vitae as they do.[1] The victims themselves find themselves growing every more emaciated with each feeding[1], something that has permitted the Formosae to flourish among pro-ana communities.

Similarly to the Vinculum practiced by the Kindred, the Beautiful Ones can create slaves by feeding their own emotion-laden flesh to a victim.[1] Additionally, Formosae can Embrace, bloating the childe's body while leaving the Formosa thin and beautiful again.[1] Eventually, a Beautiful One is compelled to abandon their harems of thralls, for a nest can only support so many of them; those thralls inevitably find their minds lost as they starve into Torpor.[3]

Trivia[]

The similarity of the Formosae to the Kindred, despite not actually being one of them, lends credence to an idea that circulated among the Ordo Dracul for a time that the five clans are not actually kindred to one another — that is, humans are merely more likely to take on certain shapes and behaviors upon being made undead, and those forms happened to run parallel into what are now called the Kindred.[2] In other words, according to this notion, a Ventrue is a fundamentally different species than a Mekhet; they just happen to look and behave similarly.
