The Court of Sciences, counterpart to the Court of Arts, was one of the Courts that led the Freehold of Golden Creation, which is known to have been active in 19th-century Mannheim, Germany.

Background

Traditionally manned by any who had interest in the physical world and invention, the Court of Sciences once was considered to be the “lower class” court in Mannheim, as tradespeople made up a large bulk of its membership. Though this remains largely true throughout the story changes wrought by the writings of the Brothers Grimm, recent political upheavals in the Court of Arts have sown tensions between those of higher status and lower. Reforms have been instituted in the Court to avoid defections to the Arts.

Heraldry

Imagery within the Court leans toward the celestial, though elegant inventions are also common. Courtiers commonly wear jewelry of gold and polished steel.

Organization

The two Courts of Mannheim determine the ruling Court through the Golden Contest, a twice-yearly event in which changelings of each Court create a work of art or invention, develop a scientific theory, or some other such labor. The victorious Court rules the freehold until the next contest. The winning changeling specifically becomes the ruler of his or her Court. The creator of the greatest work among the losing Court becomes its sovereign, as well.

Just as the Court of Arts once was, the Court of Sciences is highly hierarchical. Those who are inexperienced and/or of lower social status are assigned mentors from the ranks of the higher-ups in the Court; mentors take essentially all credit for their lessers’ work in the Golden Contest, though the students gain the opportunity to enter on their own at a later time.

Additionally, new members spend a period of time as “apprentices”, acting as servants to the ruling Council of the Court. In exchange, they are granted a living wage and lessons. Upon finishing time as an apprentice, a courtier begins approaching the point at which he becomes a mentor himself.

Contracts

Affinity Contracts for the Court of Sciences include Contracts of Talespinning, Contracts of Emotion (Wonder), and the Blessing of Perfection.
