Chan was- and currently is- the court jester of Yu Huang.
Back in the days when both he and the emperor were alive, he was the jester for Yu Huang and his son. When he was executed by Chao Kao, he was brought directly to the Emperor to be released from his Caul. Today, Chan is one of the few persons that have any influence on the emperor and enjoys more freedom than any other within the Yellow Springs. He stays in very close touch with Lei Zu.
Some people even claim that Chan could transcend if he desired it because his P'o and Hun are in balance. Further, he is able to twist and bend his body in every direction, which may be a variant of Moliate.
The Comedies of Chan are the only theatre plays in which Yu Huang and the bureaucracy of the Yellow Springs are criticized in any form.
