Carpenter was a reoccurring antagonist in the Hunter: The Reckoning console game and its sequels. Although he shares the same name as Dennis Maxwell, he's a different person.

Biography[]

Carpenter was a convict at the Ashcroft State Penitentiary for two years before finally dying at the hands of the vampire Dr. Hadrian in one of his vile experiments. Following the Arkady execution anniversary rave, Carpenter returns as a Risen. He helps the four Imbued enter the Penitentiary in order to for them open the way to Hadrian and Warden Degenhardt so he can get revenge, but is enraged to find out that the Imbued beat him to it. The resulting fight between them kills Carpenter and sends him back to the Shadowlands.

Carpenter makes a return in Wayward; saving the hunter Joshua Matthews, intentionally foiling the plans of the Witch and the Nephwrack attempting to take over Ashcroft. Near the closing of events, Carpenter congratulatory mocks the Nephwrack and provoking the Spectre. He reveals his rivalry with the Nephwrack on who has claim over Ashcroft as their Haunt. Carpenter threatens that once the four Imbued deal with him, Carpenter will be waiting for him on the otherside to settle the score.

Carpenter appears once again in Redeemer; at Ripper's Club, Carpenter reveals his alliance with Xavier Lucien and Genefex, thus in-turn the Wyrm, as well as how he made a deal with them. So that he may be fully brought back from the dead in exchange of killing the Imbued.

Background Information[]

Carpenter's got a deep rooted history with Ashcroft since he really can't leave it. He was originally a mafia hitman that was arrested and sent to Ashcroft Penitentiary. It was there that he was tortured and killed by Hadrian in his sick and twisted experiments. When Carpenter crossed over to the Shadowlands, he became so obssesed with the idea of revenge on Hadrian that he gained great power some how and began hunting him down. Then during the original Hunter game he came back to Ashcroft to hunt down and torture Hadrian the same way Hadrian did to him. It was then that he met Kassandra, Samantha, Deuce, and Esteban directing them to the prison to have them fight off the source of whatever caused Ashcroft to become what it is and leave him free and unwatched to find Hadrian. But as fate would have it, the four Hunters got to Hadrian first not knowing of Carpenter's revenge plans and killed him before Carpenter could ever find him. In a rage Carpenter attacked the four Hunters and lost to them. He was supposedly killed in this moment, but what really happened was that he went back to the Shadowlands instead of being permantly wiped out of existence. He then showed up during the incident involving the Cult and the Witch, helping Joshua Matthews out of imprisonment and getting whatever the source was out of Ashcroft behind the scenes while the Hunters fought it up front. Carpenter promised Nephrack that once it crossed back over to the Shadowlands that he'd permantly take care of it, and I'm pretty sure he did since he's still around in this game. He's made a deal with the entity that's helping out Xavier Lucien, and is running Ripper's Club putting the toxin into the drinks of the people for the entity to control.

In-game Character Card[]

"While still alive, Carpenter was a deadly mafia assassin, enforcing the will of the Don. As a wraith, Carpenter continues his bloody assassinations directed only by his own malicious and twisted will. "

"Carpenter is a badass. Period. He has strength that rivals Deuce, speed of Kassandra, and edges that only the dead may possess. Carpenter is a killer without peer."

Dialogue + Quotes[]

(In the First game) “This is Kaylie. Get her to the church. Her parents are waiting. Typical. I try to help you and this is the thanks I get. You think I can’t see you shaking at the other end of that barrel? Do you think I don’t know that your brain is trying to process the horrible fact that… OH MY GOD IT TALKS! And if it talks…it thinks. And you can’t stand that, can you? When are you going to learn that you’re not Hunters. You’re sheep… with shotguns. You don’t want me for your enemy, so take the help.”

“Forget whatever happened last year. You've barely scratched the surface of this problem. Ghosts tend to be… territorial about places where they were used like cattle and then tortured to death. They're funny that way. Arkady’s execution tore a whole into the land of the dead, and unleashed every pissed off convict that died in that place since 1931. I know you four think you actually accomplished something last year, but the truth is, they went back to sleep on their own. There was no one left for them to kill. That was of course…until this.” (shows them “Arkady’s Execution Anniversary Rave At Ashcroft Penitentiary” flyer)

“So now they’re out again, but this time, they want everybody dead. The only way to stop them permanently, is to find the person… or thing responsible for making that hole and break them. If you do that, every rot in this town will be immediately and violently evacuated back to the other side. But, any living person not 20 miles out of town, dies with them. No favorites, no exceptions, the girl, her parents, everyone… will die. Instantly. You getting it now?! No second chances and no room for your stupid prejudice!” (Departs away)

“That’s right. Don’t take no shit from anybody’s stuffed animal.”

“Carpenter…if you have to call me something, you can call me Carpenter. I checked out the prison and someone’s trying their damndest to keep people out. You won’t get through the gates… luckly, I know a secret or two.”

“My apologies. It ain’t the prettiest way, but It’ll get you inside.” (departs away)

“I was always…you know.. a tough guy. I’d been cut up, shot, and thought I knew what pain was. That weasly little son of a bitch vampire showed me how wrong I was. I spent 2 years locked up in this hole…and I don’t know what was worse, cowering in my cell at night praying the Warden and his bloodsucking partners wouldn’t want to feed on me, or listening to Hadrian giggle like a little girl while he tortured us…and took notes.”

“Save it. You wanted in, I got you in. This place is filled with more angry specters than you can possibly imagine. We spent years as human cattle for Degenhardt and his friends. And when we were no good for that, we were lab rats for Hadrian. The only reason I came back was to give Hadrian what he deserved. Four days of neverending pain. So I used you to get to him. We all got what we wanted.”

"Dead? Hadrian’s dead …but I’m still here.. You killed him? YOU KILLED HIM! Do you have any idea what it takes to get back here. Twice! He was MINE! And you…you sheep! YOU STOLE HIM FROM ME!!"

“You’re going to beg me …to kill you..”

(In the 2nd game in Wayward)

  • “Rise and shine sweetheart, It’s parole time. The Governor just come and save your ass? Now get out of my cell, forget about your friend and everything else in here.”
  • “Well done, well done, but you see, this town doesn’t belong to you, it belongs to me?”
  • “You think so eh, I’ve been working this town for a long time now and it’s not that easy to roll. The cult was a good idea, but the execution was sloppy, the same goes for the fleabag and the road country thing, that was inspired but again sloppily executed, I think your problem is a lack of foresight.”
  • “Yada, Yada, Yada, that crap might walk in the underworld, but here in the skinlands. You gotta have your shit together before you start moving on somebody else’s turf.”
  • “Me? Not yet, someone else has a bone to pick with you first. So I had to take a number this time, I don’t get your slimy ass until you’re back where you belong and once you’re back home, you’re mine.” (Departs away)

(In the 3rd game in Redeemer)

  • “So I guess you’ve noticed that your little dance with the witch and her shadowlands pet 5 years ago had some repercussions. Don’t worry though, Lucien and Genefex were quick to move in and rebuild. That’s what we do in Ashcroft you know, cover up our sins and hide them with pretty lights, make like they never happened. But you and I know the truth. So here's the story little hunters. In order for me to fully come back from the shadowlands I had to make a deal. You don’t have to worry about the details, but it basically comes down to me having to kill you. Now you know I don’t like you, but I like to think we've got this mutual grudging respect thing going on. So please do not take this ass beating I am about to lay down on you personally.”
  • “If you send me back, I can’t tell you anything… so back the hell off!! Like I said… I had to make a deal. In order to come back, I had to oversee this Club. Once a week a bunch of this stuff arrives from The Genefex Labs. I don’t know what’s in it, so don’t ask me. All I’m supposed to do is mix it into the drinks. I know what you’re thinking, but Lucien doesn’t have the power to bring me back from the shadowlands, not many things do. There’s more involved here than you think… and way more going on than Lucien wants you to know. The last thing I want to do is attract his attention. I’m getting the hell out of here before they’re noticed I’ve failed, and if you had any sense in those thick heads… you’d turn around and do the same thing.” (Departs away)

  • Carpenter is often depicted wearing leather and cloth wraps around his body, although when preparing for combat he removes the wraps, going bare-chested and donning a mask. • the primary weapons Carpenter used is (Melee Weapon: Double Knives) and (Ranged Weapon: Twin Silenced Uzi).
  • Carpenter is presented in Hunter: The Reckoning - Wayward and Hunter: The Reckoning - Redeemer using Hunter-like mechanics, with the Risen "creed." He wields the following powers:
    • Purify: Enhances the character's Melee and Ranged skills to hit harder than normal for a short period of time.
    • Phantom: Surrounds the character in a purple mist protecting them from enemies nearby. (It Acts much like the Ward Edge)

This could either mean that Hadrian was never his fetter, or Hadrian was simply a minor Passion that was never more important than his other passions that tied him to life when he was alive.
  • During interactions and his boss battle, Carpenter is shown to possess several Vampiric Disciplines including: Celerity, Fortitude, Obfuscate, and Potence.
