California is a large, populous state on the west coast of the United States. Its major cities include San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
Vampire: The Masquerade[]
Beginning in the 19th century, southern California drew large numbers of young vampires, especially those sympathetic to the Anarch Movement. In 1944, with the Camarilla distracted by the war in Europe, Jeremy MacNeill instigated the Second Anarch Revolt in Los Angeles and ousted the city's Prince. The revolt spread through much of southern California, which was dubbed the Anarch Free State.
In 1998, the Quincunx began the Great Leap Outward by attacking cities all along the California coast. The newly acquired territory was dubbed the New Promise Mandarinate. The Mandarinate is headquartered in San Francisco, while in Los Angeles an uneasy stalemate has been reached among the kuei-jin, the Anarchs, the Camarilla and opportunistic Sabbat from Mexico.
Werewolf: The Apocalypse[]
The Garou[]
The West Coast contains a varied mix of Garou. The cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles are meccas for the urban werewolves, while the redwood forests of northern California provide a haven for the Children of Gaia and other European Garou. Stargazers also have a distinct presence in California, where many of their Kinfolk live among the state's large Asian-American population.[1]
Fera[]
- In 1985, UC Berkeley brought over 20 newborn spotted hyenas to study as a colony for over 30 years. The program closed in 2014 and many of the hyenas have gone on to various other zoos and sanctuaries. Still, there's a very rare chance of at least some Ajaba or Ajaba Kinfolk made it over, ignorant of Black Tooth's massacre and their own culture.
- The Ananasi spider kin are numerous here, with both venomous and non-venomous species, such as: Black Widows, Brown Recluses, Tarantulas, Wolf Spiders, Orb Spiders, Jumping Spiders and many, many more.
- The Bastet tribes consist of visiting Balam (From the Mexico Border), native Pumonca and native Qualmi (Bobcats). As La Brea has many Smilodon californicus and Panthera atrox fossils, at one point in time, both the Khara and Simba also existed in the State during the Pleistocene era.
- Camazotz may have at one point existed in the state or visited, before the Spanish came to Mexico City in 1519 and California's San Deigo Bay in 1542.
- The Northwestern Crow and Common Raven exist in California. There is also a huge population of native crows within the state. Where their Kinfolk are, the Corax are there.
- The California Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos californicus) has been extinct since 1924. However, there are populations of native black bears (Ursus americanus californiensis). While it may be almost impossible for a Mountain Guardian Gurahl to exist, any surviving member would have had to undergo the Rite of Long Sleep before 1924.
- California has Grey Foxes, Island Foxes on the Channel Islands, Kit Foxes and Sierra Nevada Red Foxes. But as the Kitsune are from Asia, they are not native to California. They could visit via traveling within a Sentai of Hengeyokai or by themselves.
- The Mokolé belong to the Unktehi Varna.[2] As Gila monsters are native in California.
- The Nagah belong to the Zuzeka Crown in the Americas.[3] Those native to California come from either the Northern Pacific, Southern Pacific or Great Basin rattlesnake subspecies.
- The Nuwisha's coyote kin are native to California.
- The Ratkin are part of the Rat Race Plague in the Americas. Any Ratkin Rural Kingdoms consist of Desert Rats, Mountain Rats or Ghost Rats; with plenty of Urban Kingdoms for urban Rats.[4]
- As the California coast is known for having a population of Great White Sharks, Rokea are rumored to be spotted among them.[5] Other shark species in the area are listed here.
Caerns[]
- The Sept of the Western Eye[6] is located in Muir Woods National Park near San Francisco.
- The Sept of the Towering Giants[7] is located in the Sierra Nevada and is in view of two giant spirits: Grandfather Redwood and Old Man Mountain. Old Man Mountain is described as having 'a white peak that reaches almost to the sun' and is probably referring to Mount Whitney.
- The Sept of the Sheltering Spirit [8] is located on the Channel Island, Santa Cruz, and it's cave opening can only be seen via another island (San Miguel) during sunlit hours.
- The Sept of the Pointing Stars [9] is located in the eastern Sierra Nevada and describes a lake with salty waters and eerie spires that is 60 miles across, which is referring to Mono Lake.
- The Sept of the Proud Warrior [10] is located in the Mojave Desert. The "Proud Warrior" is the Joshua Tree.
- The Horrid Hole Pit[11] is located near Barker Ranch, Death Valley.
Mage: The Ascension[]
A Nephandi Labyrinth, Xsiaquotal, is located off the coast of Santa Barbara in an underwater deep grotto carved into an undersea cliff. The resident Giledian is a cheerful surfer named Marcus Delarey.[12][13]
The Arcanum has had a chapter house in San Francisco since November, 1910.[14]
Changeling: The Dreaming[]
California is largely contiguous with the Kingdom of Pacifica, one of the kingdoms that make up Concordia.[15][16][17]
A great lost dream-river (Arcadian Road) known as the San Buenaventura once connected the Grass Kingdom and Pacifica.[18]
Gallain[]
The Selkies are numerous on the coast. They have a freehold known as the Rocky Shore. Also, the Merfolk city of Atlane is off the coast of southern California.[19]
Nunnehi[]
Known native "Far West" Nunnehi consist of the Water Babies and Nümüzo'ho. However, there are probably many unknown Nunnehi from various indigenous California tribal stories.
Demon: The Fallen[]
Lucifer settled in Hollywood in 1933, and several Earthbound were attracted to the area in pursuit of him. In 1999, large numbers of escaped demons came to Los Angeles, either hoping to join forces with Lucifer or exact revenge on him.
