See also: Ban
Banes are elements of the material world with which ephemeral beings like spirits and ghosts interact oddly. This interaction results in damage to the being's Corpus via some form of mystical or symbolic interference. In short, these beings cannot abide the touch of a bane. Horrors may also possess a bane.
At low ranks, an ephemeral being's bane is liable to be fairly common, like salt or burning plastic. As the being rises in Rank, the bane becomes more and more obscure and esoteric (e.g. a silver bullet forged from a melted-down original dollar coin). Banes can deal lethal damage to a being in Twilight and aggravated damage to a Materialized one.[1]
One of the Anathema that Heroes can inflict on the Begotten creates a Bane.[2] The frailties of fae creatures potentially include Banes, of which cold iron is nearly universal.[3] Sin-Eaters are vulnerable to their geist's Bane, which is appropriate for a Rank 3 or 4 ghost; they cannot use Plasm to heal injures caused by the bane, they cannot be resurrected if killed by it, and encounters with the bane disrupt their Haunts.[4]
