A Ban is a behavior that a supernatural entity must or must not perform under certain conditions.
Every spirit, ghost and angel has a Ban that reflects its essential nature, thought the complexity and power vary depending on the entity's Rank. Rank 1 entities have very broad Bans that may slow them down but do not harm them, such as "cannot cross running water" or "must join in the recitation of a prayer." At higher Ranks, a Ban is more specific, but has more overtly deletrious effects, such as "will freeze in place for one months upon hearing a specific poem" or "must kill someone born on a Thursday to regain Willpower." Individuals who are Claimed by an entity will gain its Ban and Bane.[1]
Uratha may gain Bans when their Harmony is low, as they become more spirit-like. Some Gifts and Rites may also impose a Ban. Members of a pack much uphold the Ban of their totem to remain in its good graces.[2]
Sin-Eaters must observe their geist's Ban, which is appropriate for a Rank 3 or 4 ghost; violating it can cause strife between the Bound and geist, and encounters with the ban disrupt their Haunts.[3]
Other beings may face metaphysical restrictions that resemble a Ban. These include some of the Anathema used by Heroes against the Begotten, Glitches experienced by Demons and Stigmatics, and the Frailties of changelings and other Wyrd-touched beings.
