Bai Mianxi, the White-Faced One, is revered as the first Kitsune and the original nine-tailed fox.

Bai Mianxi was born a typical fox in the days following the War of Shame, but gradually awoke to be more intelligent and aware than others of her kind, and then learned to change shapes. She gathered a group of similarly clever foxes together, but she was clearly the leader.[1]

One day she chased a rabbit down a well, and found herself instead in Heaven. Here she made a bargain with Gaia for the safety of her people. Bai Mianxi tries to trick Gaia, but Coyote was already good at that; she tried to offer her news, but Raven had already done so; she tried to impress her magic, but Gaia's cats could do the same. Finally, Bai Mianxi plead for mercy, insisting that the foxes had never known Gaia's laws and thus could not be blamed for breaking them. Gaia relented, and they agreed that the Kitsune would serve her so that one day, they would be better than the other Fera at something.[2]

When Bai Mianxi returned from Heaven, a year had passed, and her people were scattered. She went searching for her lover, Prince Inari, and saw how all the world suffered: the Wan Xian had become the Kuei-Jin, wraiths and helpless hsien wandered the world, Namebreakers roamed the land and the Beast Courts had been torn apart by the War of Shame. When she looked to Luna in despair, Luna explained that Bai Mianxi's purpose was to bring down those leaders who were no longer fit to rule, and Bai Mianxi did so brilliantly across India, China, Korea and Japan.[1]

Eventually, the White-Faced One possessed the Jewel Maiden, a concubine of the corrupt Emperor Toba of Japan, but was caught and driven out by mages in his service. They believed her dead, but in truth, she was taken bodily back to heaven by Prince Inari, where she serves in Luna's court and guides her people in dreams and visions.[3]
