Ashcroft State Penitentiary is the primary employer in the town of Ashcroft, and the sit of numerous hidden atrocities. It is the main setting of Hunter: The Reckoning and features prominently in Hunter: The Reckoning - Wayward.
History[]
The prison came to dominate Ashcroft's economy in the 1920s. As early as 1931, prison staff were abusing and experimenting on prisoners, according to Carpenter. In 1946, a coterie of vampires took control of the prison and used the prisoners as their herd. By 1990, the coterie was down to just two: the Warden, Jeffrey Degenhardt, and Dr. Hadrian, who masterminded the experiments, creating creatures known as Fleshcrafted Ravers.
In 2001, the execution of convicted murderer Nathaniel Arkady unleashed a flood of angry ghosts from the prison, but the dead were put back down by a quartet of Imbued hunters. After this, the prison was shut down, apparently for good.
In 2002, a large crowd of young people used the defunct prison yard as the venue for a rave. Degenhardt and Hadrian used the energy of the rave to unleash the ghosts again, as part of a plan to retrieve the ghosts of Degenhardt's family and installing them in new bodies. Fortunately, the same group of hunters returned to put the dead to rest.
In 2004, a cult created a portal to the Shadowlands with the intent to bring a Nephwrack through, and this portal manifested on the prison grounds. Again, a group of hunters was on hand to stop them.
