Angels, beings sitting opposite the akathartoi in nature, are creatures of Virtue bound to tasks that are commonly associated with that Virtue.

Overview[]

According to legend, angels were split in a great battle, wherein a Betrayer turned against God, leading astray a number of followers who came to be called the Dark Ones. These fallen angels were defeated and cast down.

According to the akathartoi possessing the Lucky Ones, a number of fallen angels eventually became demons and now seek redemption. This is corroborated by the origins of the Erinyes.

Possession[]

Much like akathartoi, angels are capable of possessing human hosts. They do so for the purpose of advancing their plans, little of which they are inclined to share with those hosts. Much as with the Possessed with their demons, these hosts leak out angelic power in the form of Vestments, which are strengthened as the host grows more in tune with the possessor's Virtue.

Known Angels[]

  • The Erinyes: Originally avenging angels, the Furies fell to the corrupting influence of Hell after mortals stopped calling them and they lost their purpose.
  • Grigori: Fallen angels entirely separate from Lucifer and his ilk, the Grigori became corrupted after taking human wives. Some, though not all, managed to redeem themselves. Among their number are Azazel, Samyaza, Barqel, Penemue, and Kokabiel; however, detailed information is only given about the first.
  • Inothiel the Herald: An angel imprisoned by God for consorting with the Dark Ones. Currently trapped in the earth beneath Bishopsgate Mental Asylum.

Speculated[]

Via the given stories of other angels, particularly that of the Grigori, it is possible that Lucifer, Michael, and Uriel also exist in some form, though practically no concrete information is given regarding their place in the Chronicles of Darkness.
