Peaceful Sage
History
An Sheng was born in Hong Kong and raised in a Buddhist monastery. He thought he knew everything there was to know about fulfilling his Karmic duties. Alas, the lessons he learned were not complete.
An Sheng shut off his emotions completely and detached himself from the world around him. He did not mourn when his parents were killed in a fire that swept through Kowloon province, he isolated himself from the suffering around him and watched dispassionately the street violence that gripped Hong Kong at the time. He contented himself with prayers and rituals for he was protect while he wore the robes of a monk. He felt safe from the world of suffering and fully expected to achieve enlightenment upon his death – presumably at a rather old age.
It was his luck that he got caught up with the angry demonstrations after the tragedy of Tienanmen Square. While trying to make his way out of a crowd, he stumbled and fell. A fight started above his prone figure which was broken up by police. This caused the mob to flee, trampling An Sheng where he lay.
An Sheng was flung full on into the Maelstrom where he was beset with all the emotions that he had suppressed throughout his life. With snippets of suffering and terror racing through his P’o he was quickly returned to the Middle Kingdom where he was besieged with strange hungers and helpless as he slaughtered two factory workers returning home from their shift. The violence allowed An Sheng to gain control and sought out others like him and presented himself for punishment.
Anguo Chun instead brought An Sheng into his wu and assigned him the task of interpreting the traditions. An Sheng has adopted the ideal of restoring Hong Kong’s Keui-jin to prominence. He also rightly seeks compassion for the suffering of others, a lesson he ignored in life.
An Sheng wears the robes of a Buddhist monk. His shaven head and austere features belie his inner turmoil. He forces himself to display his emotions, but when he does so, he appears to be wearing a mask. He moves with dignity and his lips often move in silent prayers. (World of Darkness: Hong Kong, p. 61)
