Amsterdam is the capital and the most populous city in the Netherlands. For information on the real-world city, see: Amsterdam.
Vampire: The Masquerade[]
During the Victorian Age, the Prince of Amsterdam was the Ventrue Johannes Castelein. The former capital city was divided into many small islands, many of which were claimed as individual Kindred domains. The Kindred of the city and by extension, within the whole country, see their kin in Belgium and Luxembourg as allies and comrades.[1]
In modern nights, Castelein's childe Arjan Voorheis succeeded him as Prince of Amsterdam.[2] William Thorbeck was Regent of Amsterdam's Tremere chantry until 1989, when he was destroyed by the Sabbat; his successor is his childe, Lille Haake. In the late 1990s, the Beryn family of Clan Giovanni began encroaching on the city, and Prince Arjan allied himself with a Sabbat agent, Hendrik van Dyck, to drive them out; Haake took the side of the Beryns, however, leading to an intense standoff.[3]
The Amsterdam domain is part of the Consortium. Though at one point it was a Sabbat domain known for its abusive Cainites. Black Lotus was Embraced there, becoming one of the domain's cruelest, most militant Sabbat.[4] Also one of the cities where the Romanian Legacy Foundation holds its conventions.[5]
Werewolf: The Apocalypse[]
The Bone Gnawers of Amsterdam have an alliance of a sort with the fae Court of Tulips, allowing access to their caerns in exchange for help influencing the mortal government.[6]
Mage: The Ascension[]
The Dutch permissive attitudes toward mood-altering substances had the Cult of Ecstasy and Children of Knowledge show up in Amsterdam to take advantage. The Progenitors have been relegated to a small ethnographic team to study the effects of the looser laws on the health of the population. While the NWO attempts to root out the Reality Deviants so the Progenitors can fully move into the city.[7]
The city also hosts the headquarters of the Ancient Order of the Aeon Rites.[8][9] And the Arcanum has established a Chapter House in the city. [10]
Wraith: The Oblivion[]
Amsterdam is where the Anacreon in charge of the Warriors of Lethe; Marcus Stavaston, has his headquarters.[11] The Necropolis is full of tall, narrow buildings jammed together at strange angles, as if the structures might topple over at any moment. As much of the city is built on peat bogs, some relic buildings are partially or completely sunk.
Amsterdam's role as a long-time hub of commerce means the wraithly population is quite diverse, including Jewish and Protestant Heretics and many active (though discreet) Guild members. William the Silent, known as William of Orange in life, served as Anacreon until the Night of Short Chains, when the Grim Legion occupied the necropolis. The Dutch wraiths were not prepared to resist the occupation, but the mounted a fierce resistance to it.[12]
Changeling: The Dreaming[]
Amsterdam is part of the Duchy of Tulips in the Kingdom of Flowers. Its ruler, Gwilliam of House Liam, rejected the strife of the Accordance War in Concordia in favor of finding a home for his much-maligned house in Europe. He became duke in 1980 and has fostered excellent relations between the nobles and the commoners in his Court of Tulips with the help of Count Dongahue.[13][14]
Hunter: The Reckoning[]
The Amsterdam Cenaculum is the Society of Leopold's clearinghouse for information for all the northern countries in Europe. It was founded in the 17th century, when Holland was the wealthiest nation in the world. Which is still reflected by the coffers of this Cenaculum.[15]
