Curator Amos Roland works at a private museum in Raleigh, North Carolina. When a thief broke into the museum and damaged an exhibit, he reported the break-in to the police; Hank Machak and Lucas Dawnish responded. Amos tried to persuade them that the thief was some kind of large animal, but Dawnish mocked him for his gullibility and for being openly gay.
After filing a police report, Amos went home with Hank, who apologized for how he and Dawnish had treated him. The two men ended up sleeping together. Afterwards, Amos tried to tell Hank about the artifacts he was studying, a set of stones from Indonesia - part of the same set that was damaged in the break-in. They were startled by the arrival of a Bastet in war form, looking for the same stone. To Amos' horror, Hank turned into an enormous lizard and fought the were-cat, who turned out to be Officer Dawnish.
Afterwards, Amos demanded explanation from Hank, and told him that keeping secrets — about one's sexuality or, apparently, one's species — is dangerous. He also agreed that he and Hank should report Dawnish to the police, using the cover story that he had assaulted them for being gay.
