Adam Jameson was a black boy who had the misfortune to date the daughter of a local Ku Klux Klanner, Harold Naismith. When Maryann Naismith disappeared, her father went investigating, discovered the relationship, and came to the conclusion that Jameson had killed her. He gathered his local Klansmen and lynched Jameson. The next month, the actual killer, a traveling salesman in the next state over, was arrested and executed for the murder.
The tree where Jameson was lynched has since become a locus around which spirits gather to consume pain- and desperation-soaked Essence.
