- The ruling Carthian council of Hanoi, Vietnam, declares domain illegal and abolish territories.[2]
- Mobutu Sese Seko is forced from power in Zaire; his successor, Laurent-Desire Kabila, renames the country the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Republique Democratique du Congo).[3]
- The "Budapest Incident" establishes that mages under attack by Seer-summoned Supernal entities have the right to self-defense.[4]
- 1997-1998: Mulhithim spawned by the Hale-Bopp Comet harass the Forsaken.[5]
- The Bedford Hermetic Coalition attempts to ritually sever their souls from their bodies so as to enter the Astral World without baggage from the Physical. All but Bedford himself fail. Some force prevents Bedford from returning to his body, however, leaving him in a comatose state.[6]
July[]
- July 17: The Mysterium cabal "The Past Masters" clash with the Seer pylon "March of History". Both are masters in the Time Arcanum and the battle produces a disastrous Time Paradox that gives rise to the Cult of the Doomsday Clock. [7]
