- 1208-1244: Albigensian Crusade against the Cathars in France begins when one of the knights of the Count of Toulouse murders one of the Pope's legates.
- King John of England is excommunicated after a dispute with the pope over the office of the archbishopric of Canterbury. England falls under papal jurisdiction.
- Béziers is besieged by the Albigensian Crusaders. Arnaud Amaury, in secret a member of the Inquisition, speaks the famous words "Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius." (Massacre them. The Lord will know his own.) The city is razed and around 20,000 people are killed.
