- Hugh de Payen founds the Poor Soldiers of Christ, nine of which swear vows to defend pilgrims in the Holy Land from attacks by infidels. After King Baldwin offers them a wing of his quarters on the north side of the Temple of Solomon, they rename themselves the Military Order of the Poor Knights of the Temple of Solomon, also known as the Knights Templar. Three of the founders are mages belonging to the Cabal of Pure Thought. They also had some ties to the Messianic Voices.[1][2][3][4]
